The textbook Subaru failure: 1996–2009 SOHC EJ25 (Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza, Baja) develops an external coolant leak at the head-to-block seam — not internal combustion-chamber breach. Standard repair is Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) revised-design gasket replacement, not the original composite. Bay Area cost range $1,800–$2,800 depending on whether you bundle timing belt + water pump + thermostat (recommended — engine's already apart). FB-series engines (2011+) have a different profile: cam carrier oil leaks are more common than head gasket. CVT (TR580 / TR690) fluid service interval matters — we use OEM-spec CVTF.

Recall scope and extended-powertrain-warranty coverage vary by VIN, model year, and platform. Mazda

CX-5, CX-9, Mazda3, Mazda6 with the Skyactiv-G family can develop oil dilution — fuel-in-oil from short-trip / cold-climate operation pattern, more pronounced on the 2.5T (turbo). Symptom is fuel smell in the oil and oil level rising on the dipstick. Mazda issued software calibration TSBs; shorter oil change intervals are the field practice. Skyactiv water pump is internal (driven by the timing chain) — replacement requires substantial engine teardown when it leaks, so address symptoms early. Carbon buildup on direct-injection intake valves is the standard high-mileage finding.
Bay Area Specific: Prius Catalytic Converter Theft + Shield Install
San Mateo, Foster City, and Burlingame have an active Toyota Prius cat-theft problem — Gen 2 (2004–2009) and Gen 3 (2010–2015) Priuses are the most-targeted because the catalytic converter sits low and unsheltered, the precious-metal content is high, and a thief with a Sawzall can lift one in under two minutes.
